OpenAI, a research and deployment company focused on artificial intelligence, has partnered with Oracle to develop 4.5 gigawatts of new Stargate data center capacity in the United States. This expansion brings OpenAI’s total Stargate capacity under development to over 5 gigawatts, supporting more than 2 million chips. The initiative contributes to OpenAI’s broader goal of investing $500 billion in 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure across four years, a commitment first outlined at the White House. The company now expects to exceed that target due to strong progress with partners, including Oracle and SoftBank. The company stated that the investment aims to generate employment, speed up the reindustrialization of the United States, and support the country’s progress in artificial intelligence.
The new capacity is projected to generate over 100,000 jobs across construction, operations, manufacturing, and local services. Early phases of Stargate I in Abilene, Texas, are already operational, with Nvidia GB200 racks delivered, AI training workloads underway and thousands of specialized roles already created. Partnerships with SoftBank and CoreWeave continue to support data center development, while Microsoft remains a key cloud services provider. OpenAI highlighted that the opportunity was now becoming a reality due to strong support from partners, governments, and investors around the world.
