Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed skepticism over the estimated $7 trillion cost of Sam Altman’s global artificial intelligence (AI) expansion plans. Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Huang emphasized that advances in computing, particularly in the chip industry, would likely reduce the overall expense of developing AI. He argued that the increasing speed and efficiency of computer components would lead to a decrease in the total number of computers needed for AI development, potentially making Altman’s ambitious fundraising efforts unnecessary.
Huang’s remarks came in response to a recent Wall Street Journal report indicating Altman’s intention to raise funds, potentially between $5 trillion to $7 trillion, to address the scarcity of AI chips used in training large language models. Huang suggested that rather than engaging in a chip arms race, the focus should be on advancing cost-efficient chips. Despite anticipating a doubling of the global cost of data centers powering AI over the next five years, Huang sees a promising era ahead, with a significant expansion in data center investments reaching $2 trillion to support global software applications.
