IBM is pushing beyond the coding assistant category with Bob, an agentic AI development partner built to support the full software development lifecycle. Now globally available, Bob is designed to coordinate work across planning, testing, deployment, modernization, and code generation using frontier models from Anthropic, Mistral, and IBM. The platform includes a dedicated CLI for real-time auditability and security features like sensitive data scanning and AI red-teaming. “IBM Bob is how enterprises can move at AI speed without sacrificing governance,” stated Dinesh Nirmal, Senior Vice President at IBM Software.

The platform demonstrated significant efficiency gains during internal testing with 80,000 IBM employees, who reported an average productivity increase of 45%. Specific results included a 70% reduction in task time for the IBM Instana team and a Java upgrade for consulting firm Blue Pearl that dropped from 30 days to three. Bob utilizes a dynamic routing system to send simple tasks to lighter models and complex reasoning to more capable ones. General Manager Neel Sundaresan noted the system acts as a partner for every role, from architects to security engineers.

Enterprises including Ernst & Young and APIS IT are using Bob to modernize mission-critical systems and automate code refactoring. The tool is designed to address technical debt in legacy environments, with APIS IT reporting architecture analysis 10 times faster than manual methods. Bob is now available as a SaaS offering, with on-premises deployment options planned for future release.
