Apple will use Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology to underpin upcoming Apple Intelligence capabilities, including a more personalized Siri expected later this year, according to a joint statement from the companies. Apple said it selected Google’s AI as the “most capable foundation” for its next generation of Apple Foundation Models, after evaluating alternatives; reporting has also described Apple testing other providers and keeping the arrangement non-exclusive. Financial terms were not disclosed, though prior reports have pegged the cost at roughly $1 billion.
The tie-up lands as Apple works to close a visible gap between Siri and newer chatbot-style assistants, while keeping its privacy posture intact. Apple and Google said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, with the partnership structured to preserve Apple’s privacy standards. The announcement also re-raises antitrust scrutiny around the companies’ long-running relationship, which has already been central to U.S. litigation over Google’s default search agreements with Apple.
