Amazon is backing a new effort to make the AI boom easier on water systems. Through AWS, Amazon joined the Water Environment Federation, the Water Center at the University of Pennsylvania, and Leading Utilities of the World to launch the Water-AI Nexus Center of Excellence. The initiative centers on two tracks: cutting water use tied to AI infrastructure (“Water for AI”) and applying AI tools to water scarcity and utility operations (“AI for Water”).
The initiative is rolling out as a shared “knowledge hub” for utilities, researchers, and tech companies, with early work centered on standards, case studies, and cross-sector collaboration. A key first deliverable is a new guidance document, “Principles for Sustainable Water Use by Data Centers,” built around four pillars: strategic design and location, operational efficiency, sustainable water sourcing, and replenishment that returns water to communities. Amazon also tied its participation to an internal target: returning more water to communities than it uses across its data centers by 2030—and framing the Center as a way to spread workable best practices beyond one operator.
