Microsoft, a global technology company, has launched its first Southeast Asian research lab, Microsoft Research Asia-Singapore, marking a strategic move to expand AI innovation across the region. Supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the lab will focus on developing domain-specific AI models, advancing precision health, and promoting culturally aligned and reliable AI systems. The initiative aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0 and builds on over two decades of Microsoft’s collaboration with local institutions. Peter Lee, President of Microsoft Research, highlighted, “Singapore plays a critical role in our global research strategy. Its leadership in science, engineering and digital governance, along with its strong culture of public-private-academic collaboration, makes it an ideal environment for advancing inclusive and impactful AI.”

The lab is already driving interdisciplinary initiatives across sectors like healthcare, logistics, and finance through partnerships with organizations such as SingHealth, NUS, and NTU Singapore. It also emphasizes research talent development, working with institutions like NUS, NTU, and SMU to advance both theoretical and applied AI. “By working closely with Singapore’s research and innovation ecosystem, we aim to accelerate scientific discovery and build AI technologies that drive real impact for industry, society, and individuals alike,” noted Lidong Zhou, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft. The lab aims to support long-term regional growth through talent cultivation, collaborative research, and targeted AI applications.
