Alphabet’s Google has entered a $2.4 billion licensing agreement with AI code-generation startup Windsurf, securing access to its technology on non-exclusive terms while hiring key executives and researchers. The arrangement brings Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, Co-Founder Douglas Chen, and select members of the R&D team to Google DeepMind, where they will contribute to agentic coding projects under the Gemini initiative. “We’re excited to welcome some top AI coding talent from Windsurf’s team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in agentic coding,” the company said. The deal follows Windsurf’s earlier discussions with OpenAI for a potential $3 billion acquisition, highlighting intense interest in the AI coding sector. Windsurf’s investors, including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst, retain their stakes while gaining liquidity from the license fee.
This move mirrors Google’s August 2024 hiring of key staff from Character.AI and fits a broader industry pattern of acquihire deals by major tech firms like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta. These transactions typically avoid regulatory scrutiny but have faced growing antitrust attention. Windsurf’s head of business, Jeff Wang, will serve as interim CEO, while Graham Moreno becomes president. The majority of Windsurf’s 250 employees will remain, with the company reaffirming its focus on serving enterprise clients. The deal strengthens Google’s position in the competitive AI talent market.
